What is a sandfly?

If bites are scratched, they can get infected and become very painful. Some people do not seem to be bothered by sandflies at all while others are ravaged by these creatures. Locals do not seem to be affected, so it may be that they build up an immunity to sandfly bites.

Where and when are sandflies found?
Some people say they cannot fly, but jump. If they do fly, they cannot fly very far as sandflies will only be found very close to the wet sandy beaches and in vegetation like seaweed. So unless you have been sitting or lying on the beach, you will only get bitten around the ankles and feet. And only in the early hours of the morning and at dusk.

How can one protect oneself?
If you have an allergic reaction to sandfly bites, it is best for you to stay away from the beach at dawn and dusk. If that is not possible, then you should cover your body, especially your feet and lower legs. Socks and shoes on the beach may not look attractive, but it is better to look a bit strange than to be a meal for these creatures. There are many personal insect repellants that keep away sandflies, so investing in one that suits you is a good idea.

Because some people do not see sandflies and do not feel it when they are bitten, they may think that they have been bitten by bedbugs. I have consulted with the Trelawny Health Department in Jamaica and been advised that there have been no incidents of bedbugs reported for decades. I visited a house at Silver Sands villas, where visitors complained of bedbugs. They would not believe that they were bitten by sandflies, but the health inspector examined everywhere and found no trace of bedbugs. He advised me that bedbugs are not too small to be seen and that one can smell their presence.

6)Madeinusa: Named for the main character, a Peruvian village teenager named Madeinusa. The film covers the powerful mystical rituals of Perus Andes, as well as chronic alcohol, domestic, and sexual abuse in rural towns.

7)Dioses (Gods): A dramatic film that portrays the empty lives of the Lima upper class. The heavy theme of incest could be considered unusual and at times upsetting, but the good acting, quality dialogue, and excellent cinematography make for a decent film.

8)Das de Santiago (Days of Santiago): An ex-soldier named Santiago returns to Lima after combat and finds himself lost. The young man faces unbelievable struggles back home, and it seems to him as if war was preferable alternative. The film follows him has he works as a taxi driver, enrolls in a lousy institute, and protects his abused sister-in-law. Sadly, it seems nothing can go right for him.

9)Mariposa negra (Black Butterfly): This gripping movie follows Gabriela, a school teacher seeking revenge for the murder of her fianc. Made in the 1990s, this movie is about corruption and revenge, and at times is dark but sexy.

10)La Teta Asustada (The Milk of Sorrow): Perus first Oscar nominated films deserves all the attention it received. It follows the character Fausto, a girl struggling to properly bury her mother. Set in the outskirts of Lima, the dramatic war movie has eerie Quechua melodies and a great plot.
